5 out of 5 stars Strong after 2 years. Fantastic sound and isolation!   March 2, 2009

Summary: Absolutely wonderful headphones. You won't find better sound for this price range. The isolation is FANTASTIC. The only problem, after 2 years, is that part of the wires are starting to fray inside the cord, due to the way the case holds the cord. You can avoid this by leaving the plug end loose in the middle of the cylinder near the volume knob (instead of pushing it into the small groove in the side).

------

I really can't say anything that hasn't been better-stated in previous reviews, like the featured ones. I'll just add in that I've used these headphones every day for over two years, and they are the best I have ever owned.

I was originally going to purchase a noise-canceling pair of headphones, but after some research and comments from enthusiast websites, I decided to go with these noise-isolating earphones. It was an excellent decision. When properly fitted, these babies silence EVERYTHING when you have music on. I've mowed the yard and couldn't notice that the lawnmower died except that it wouldn't keep moving. It reduces airplane noise to the sound of a soft breeze. And, unlike active noise cancellation, it doesn't create the sensation of low pressure that some experience.

The sound quality is too good to be true. I noticed things I had never heard before in songs I'd listened to for many years. Any lighter kind of music, especially with a focus on vocals, will sound simply astonishing. The quality of your sound will be limited by your source.

I do think these require a burn-in period. Plug them into a sound source and run them for a while.

As far as long-term durability, I can't complain at all. They still sound as good as they did when I started using them (as far as I can remember). The rubber flanges start to wear down and don't insulate as well after 2 years, but they still isolate well.

One of the main problems I've had is that the wire in the cord has been slightly damaged by the carrying case. Sometimes, the sound in one ear will cut out if I don't straighten out the cord. This can be avoided. When you store it in the case, you should wrap it well, but not too tightly, and when you get down to the plug end, you should not push the cord into the thin groove on the side. Just leave it loose in the middle of the cylindrical area where the volume knob goes.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent sound, awesome Bass/HD feature   February 10, 2009

Not only do the iM716's offer excellent sound, they are essentially two headphones in one. You do not have to make the unavoidable tradeoff between bass and clarity before you even purchase your headphones and be stuck with one or the other. You can settle on your favorite after days of experimenting, or switch on the go based on the type of audio you're listening or your mood.

I didn't like the foam/silicone inserts that come with these. They're not designed for small ears. Shure makes really good inserts that fit these headphones. People call them "olives," but I forget the real model number when you go out and try to buy them.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty dang good   July 8, 2008

Bought these two years ago, for my transit to school on the light rail and bus. They do their job well. Even if i sit at the back of the bus, right next to the engine, I don't need to crank up the volume on my music player. Probably saved my ears from a beating.

As far as the sound goes they are better than the stock earbuds that came from with my player. The sound is a lot cleaner and you can hear a lot more in the music.

There are two sounds modes:HD and bass. Compared to HD mode, bass mode is slight louder and brings out the lower freqences. Works as intended I guess.

As far as microphonics(sp?) go, they where not much of a problem for me as i was sitting still most of the time. Using the clip on the volume pod helps a lot if your moving around though.

Overall, pretty good earphone. It's still working after almost 2 years of continuous use and abuse.

On a side note ,if you need replacement filters the ety8 uses the same filters. they can be bought at the etymotic website. You'll want the ER88-50.

1 out of 5 stars Microphonics drives me crazy!!!   May 25, 2008

I bought these back when they were on sale for something less than $50, can't remember exactly how much. . .

Others have applauded the superior sound quality, and I will second that without repeating the details. However, there is too little emphasis on the side effects of this technology: microphonics, the noise induction when under isolation.

Basically, the cables connected to the earpieces rub up against your shirt, ID badge, iPod, whatever. . . and you hear every single impulse and beat of that damn cable moving around. It's akin to hearing a motor boat miles away when underwater or holding your ear against a wall to eavesdrop on your neighbor. I find myself having to hold myself completely still to enjoy my music when I wear these.

So, if you are mostly docile and sedentary when listening, you'll be able to enjoy these. If you're moving about the slightest, such as rotating in your chair to reach for a pen, you WILL hear that cable rubbing. If you're looking for something to take on your jog, keep on looking. The cable noise will drive you crazy.

There's a new drawback with the advent of new digital music devices. The jack won't fit into the iPhone! Not good.

5 out of 5 stars Bargain sound   February 24, 2008

I bought these for $50 from the "used and new" link; at that price, they are 1/7 the list price of the Etymotic ER4P they resemble, and 1/4 their discount price.

At first I thought they sounded tinny and I had trouble fitting them in my ear canal.

I burned them in for 24 hours (someone recommends 7 days) and the sound warmed up a lot. I found the flange eartips give better sound than the foamies. Moistening them made insertion better.

Now I am getting really nice sound from them for the price. In Bass mode, Bass, tremble, clarity, transient response, detail.

Compared to the Sennheiser PC 166 USB, handy for comparison, it is much better in Bass mode all qualities mentioned above. The headset has a slightly warmer presence for male vocals and a very little more efficiency. In HD mode, it is significantly less efficient and bass is much less, less than the 166, but the male vocal is warm and present. I suspect the Bass mode introduces some small distortions in the bass response.

I have read that the Etymotic ER88-50 filters and the ER61-18 eartips available on the etymotic website fit the IM716. Other accessories look like they would work. Good info as Altec Lansing may no longer market these.
